TYPES OF
HAZARD/
EXPOSURE
ACUTE HAZARDS/
SYMPTOMS
PREVENTION FIRST AID/
FIRE FIGHTING
FIRE Combustible. Liquid formulations containing organic solvents may be flammable. Gives off irritating or toxic fumes (or gases) in a fire.
NO open flames.
Powder, water spray, foam, carbon dioxide.
EXPLOSION The explosion hazard will depend on the solvent used in the formulation.

EXPOSURE
STRICT HYGIENE! AVOID EXPOSURE OF ADOLESCENTS AND CHILDREN!
IN ALL CASES CONSULT A DOCTOR!
  • INHALATION
  • Dizziness. Laboured breathing. Nausea, Unconsciousness. Vomiting. Pupillary constriction, muscle cramp, excessive salivation.
Ventilation, local exhaust, or breathing protection.
Fresh air, rest. Refer for medical attention.
  • SKIN
  • MAY BE ABSORBED! (further see Inhalation).
    Protective gloves. Protective clothing.
Remove contaminated clothes. Rinse and then wash skin with water and soap. Refer for medical attention.
  • EYES
  • Blurred vision.
    Face shield.
First rinse with plenty of water for several minutes (remove contact lenses if easily possible), then take to a doctor.
  • INGESTION
  • Abdominal cramps. Diarrhoea. Laboured breathing. Nausea. Unconsciousness. Vomiting. Pupillary constriction, muscle cramps, excessive salivation.
Do not eat, drink, or smoke during work.
Induce vomiting (ONLY IN CONSCIOUS PERSONS!). Rest. Refer for medical attention.
SPILLAGE DISPOSAL STORAGE PACKAGING & LABELLING
Collect leaking and spilled liquid in sealable containers as far as possible, absorb remaining liquid in sand or inert absorbent and remove to safe place. Do NOT wash away into sewers. (extra personal protection: complete protective clothing including self-contained breathing apparatus).
Separated from food and feedstuffs. Cool. Dry. Keep in a well-ventilated room.
Do not transport with food and feedstuffs.

    PHYSICAL STATE; APPEARANCE
YELLOW TO BROWN LIQUID , WITH CHARACTERISTIC ODOUR.

    PHYSICAL DANGERS:

    CHEMICAL DANGERS:
The substance decomposes on heating and on burning producing toxic and corrosive fumes including nitrogen oxides and phosphorus oxides. Attacks iron, steel, brass. The substance decomposes after prolonged storage at 55 C.

    OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE LIMITS:
    TLV: ppm; 0.25 mg/m3 (skin) (ACGIH 1991-1992).

    ROUTES OF EXPOSURE:
The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation of its aerosol, through the skin, by ingestion.

    INHALATION RISK:
Evaporation at 20C is negligible; a nuisance-causing concentration of airborne particles can however be reached quickly when dispersed, especially, if powdered.

    EFFECTS OF SHORT-TERM EXPOSURE:
The substance may cause effects on the nervous system , resulting in convulsions, respiratory failure. Cholinesterase inhibitor. Exposure at high level may result in death. The effects may be delayed. Medical observation is indicated.

EFFECTS OF LONG-TERM OR REPEATED EXPOSURE:
Cholinesterase inhibitor; cumulative effect is possible: see acute hazards/symptoms.
    PHYSICAL
    PROPERTIES
    Boiling point: 400C
    Relative density (water = 1): 1.216 at 15C
    Solubility in water: good
Vapour pressure, Pa at 20C: 0.013
    Flash point: >93C (c.c.)
    ENVIRONMENTAL
    DATA
This substance may be hazardous to the environment; special attention should be given to fish.
    NOTES
Depending on the degree of exposure, periodic medical examination is indicated. Specific treatment is necessary in case of poisoning with this substance; the appropriate means with instructions must be available. Carrier solvents used in commercial formulations may change physical and toxicological properties. Do NOT take working clothes home. Bidrin, Carbicron, Ektafos and Diafadrin are trade names.
