TYPES OF
HAZARD/
EXPOSURE
ACUTE HAZARDS/
SYMPTOMS
PREVENTION FIRST AID/
FIRE FIGHTING
FIRE Combustible. Gives off irritating or toxic fumes (or gases) in a fire.
NO open flames.
Powder, alcohol-resistant foam, water spray, carbon dioxide.
EXPLOSION Finely dispersed particles form explosive mixtures in air.
Prevent deposition of dust; closed system, dust explosion-proof electrical equipment and lighting.

EXPOSURE
STRICT HYGIENE!
IN ALL CASES CONSULT A DOCTOR!
  • INHALATION
  • Convulsions. Dizziness. Headache. Nausea. Shortness of breath. Weakness. Increased blood pressure. Collapse.
    Local exhaust or breathing protection.
Fresh air, rest. Artificial respiration if indicated. Refer for medical attention.
  • SKIN
  • MAY BE ABSORBED! Redness (Further see Inhalation).
    Protective gloves. Protective clothing.
Remove contaminated clothes. Rinse skin with plenty of water or shower.
  • EYES
  • Redness.
Face shield or eye protection in combination with breathing protection.
First rinse with plenty of water for several minutes (remove contact lenses if easily possible), then take to a doctor.
  • INGESTION
  • (further see Inhalation).
Do not eat, drink, or smoke during work.
Rinse mouth. Refer for medical attention.
SPILLAGE DISPOSAL STORAGE PACKAGING & LABELLING
Ventilation. Sweep spilled substance into sealable containers; if appropriate, moisten first to prevent dusting. Carefully collect remainder, then remove to safe place (extra personal protection: P3 filter respirator for toxic particles).
Separated from strong oxidants, food and feedstuffs. Dry.
Airtight. Do not transport with food and feedstuffs.
    UN Hazard Class: 6.1

    PHYSICAL STATE; APPEARANCE:
COLOURLESS OR WHITE POWDER OR CRYSTALS , WITH CHARACTERISTIC ODOUR.

    PHYSICAL DANGERS:
Dust explosion possible if in powder or granular form, mixed with air.

    CHEMICAL DANGERS:
The substance decomposes on burning producing toxic gases and vapours including nitrous oxides. Reacts with strong oxidants causing fire and explosion hazard. The substance is a strong base that is soluble in water.

    OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE LIMITS (OELs):
    TLV: 0.5 ppm; 1.9 mg/m3 (as TWA) (ACGIH 1993-1994).

    ROUTES OF EXPOSURE:
The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation of its aerosol and through the skin.

    INHALATION RISK:
A harmful contamination of the air can be reached rather quickly on evaporation of this substance at 20C.

    EFFECTS OF SHORT-TERM EXPOSURE:
The substance irritates the eyes, the skin and the respiratory tract. The substance may cause effects on the central nervous system , resulting in convulsions, respiratory failure. Exposure may result in death.

EFFECTS OF LONG-TERM OR REPEATED EXPOSURE:
    PHYSICAL
    PROPERTIES
    Boiling point: 211C
    Melting point: 58C
Relative density (water = 1): see Notes
    Solubility in water: very good
Vapour pressure, kPa at 20C: about 0.13
    Relative vapour density (air = 1): 3.2
    Flash point: 68C c.c.
Octanol/water partition coefficient as log Pow: 0.49
    ENVIRONMENTAL
    DATA

    N O T E S
Relative density and auto-ignition temperature are unknown in literature. Combustible solid whose vapours can form explosive mixtures with air at elevated temperatures. The relation between odour and the occupational exposure limit cannot be indicated. Do NOT take working clothes home.
