Methomyl Technical: Decomposes at 135C. FIRE EXTINGUISHING MEDIA: This material will not burn or burns with difficulty. Use an extinguishing agent suitable for surrounding fires. FIRE CONTROL TACTICS: Wear self-contained, positive pressure breathing apparatus and full fire fighting protective clothing. Keep unnecessary people away. Use as little water as possible. Dike area of fire to prevent pesticide run-off. Use spray or fog - solid stream may cause spreading. Conduct fire fighting and rescue operations from upwind of the fire area. Evacuate people downwind who may come in contact with smoke, fumes, or contaminated surfaces. Do not decontaminate personnel or equipment, or handle broken packages or containers without protective equipment as specified in the Exposure Control Section. Decontaminate emergency personnel with soap and water before leaving the fire area. Avoid breathing dusts, vapors and fumes from burning materials. Alert medical personnel to be ready to treat for pesticide poisoning. Control run-off water - if water enters a drainage system, advise the authorities downstream. This material has been tested "as is" in a 20-liter spherical bomb (per NFPA 68-1978) and has been found to be a Class ST-1 dust explosion hazard. 3% of this material passed through a 200 mesh screen. If the material is further processed, the dust explosion hazard may change and it should be retested. _______________________________________________________________________________ NFPA HAZARD (As Recommended by American Cyanamid Co.) Flucythrinate Tech.: DECOMPOSITION Treatment with strong acid could PRODUCTS: result in HCN. Treatment with strong bases could result in free evolution. Methomyl Tech.: Decomposes with heat. Hazardous gases produced are H<2>S and oxides of sulfur. _______________________________________________________________________________ HEALTH HAZARD TOXICITY DATA AND INFORMATION EFFECTS OF OVEREXPOSURE: ACUTE TOXICITY DATA: The acute oral LD<50> in rats for the combined sexes was calculated to be around 68 mg/kg b.w. while the oral LD<50> in mice was around 50 mg/kg b.w. These values indicate that the material is highly toxic when ingested in single doses. The dermal LD<50> in rats was shown to be greater than 2000 mg/kg b.w. (highest dose tested) indicating that the material is no more than slightly toxic by a single skin application. No information is available on primary eye and skin irritation on this particular formulation. However, data on technical material for each major constituent in the formulation indicate that the materials are both eye and skin irritants. Methomyl is in the carbamate chemical family and is a known cholinesterase inhibitor. This formulated product should be handled accordingly. EMERGENCY AND FIRST AID PROCEDURES: : Induce vomiting immediately by giving two glasses of water and sticking finger down throat. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. Get medical help. : Flush eyes with copious amounts of water. Get medical attention. : Wash skin with plenty of soap and water. Get medical attention. Remove contaminated clothing and shoes. Wash clothing and decontaminate shoes before reuse. : Remove to fresh air. If not breathing give artificial respiration. Get medical attention. MSDS SHEET NO. IN07025-2 PAGE 4 _______________________________________________________________________________ NOTES TO PHYSICIAN: Overexposure may produce effects associated with cholinesterase inhibition including weakness, blurred vision, headache, nausea, cramps, tightness in chest, etc. Treat with atropine. Use of 2-PAM is contraindicated for treatment of methomyl poisoning. Flucythrinate may cause a direct facial nerve irritation on direct contact. Topical application of olive oil has been found to be beneficial. _______________________________________________________________________________ EXPOSURE During formulation of this product, it is recommended to CONTROL METHODS use the following industrial hygiene practices: Provide adequate local ventilation and avoid breathing dust powder by wearing a full-face NIOSH approved pesticide respirator. Wear eye goggles and face shield and disposable rubber gloves when handling this material. Administer a blood cholinesterase program at workplace. Wash thoroughly with soap and water after handling and before eating or smoking. Remove contaminated clothing, wash before reuse. _______________________________________________________________________________ SPILL OR LEAK Wear the above mentioned personal protective clothing/ PROCEDURES equipment, shovel the spilled material into a closed metal container for disposal. The contaminated area should be cleaned with a 20% caustic solution. The rinse water should be placed in a steel container. ____________________________________________________________________________ WASTE DISPOSAL: Dispose in accordance with local, state, and federal regulations. _______________________________________________________________________________ SPECIAL HANDLING AND STORAGE: PRECAUTIONS Do not contaminate water, food, or feed by storage or disposal. Store in a secure, dry, well-ventilated separate room, building or covered area. Not for use or storage in or around the home. Keep away from sources of ignition and protect from exposure to fire and heat. Segregate from oxidizers and incompatible materials listed in the Reactivity Data Section. Maintain good housekeeping to control dust accumulations. Due to the dust explosion hazard, all equipment should have explosion venting per NFPA 68-1978. All electrical wiring and equipment should meet the provisions of NFPA-70. _______________________________________________________________________________ MSDS SHEET NO.
